All cultures in the world have some kind of basket-making
tradition. Beautiful and practical. Basket-making at Fig Hill Farm
connects to a number of those traditions, and yields useful vessels
for life on the farm–gathering eggs, harvesting vegetables, holding
yarn and winter hats, carrying firewood, etc.
So far, these are the kinds of baskets I’ve been making, and have for sale, at the Lawrence Farmers Market, the Bizarre Bazaar sale in November, or directly from me at the farm.
BARK BASKETS are made from materials gathered on my farm: Barks from willow, mimosa, mulberry, osage orange, black walnut, and other trees; and twiners of bindweed, dogbane, milkweed, hemp, sedge, iris leaf, and other fibers.
WILLOW BASKETS are made from willow grown at Fig Hill Farm. I’m just beginning my willow-weaving journey, and my skills will increase as my willow production increases.
MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS: Honeysuckle and wisteria vines are great for weaving.
